Warfare in the Age of
Reason
Army Lists for the War
of the Spanish Succession
These army lists are designed to provide suitable massings
of troops for wargaming battles of the War of the Spanish Succession using
Warfare in the Age of Reason rule set. They are not meant to be an historical
rendering of the troops that fought during this war, but a method of providing
historically plausible combatants.
Although the rules are designed primarily for use in mid
18th century warfare, they work very well for the early part of the century
too. The army lists provided for this war in the rules, are very basic
and in the 2nd edition are not included.
In preparing these lists we have strayed from the format
of the army lists presented in the rules. We did this because we found
that as our forces were amassed and painted, we tended to arrange them
in their brigades. Brigades, typically of 4 battalions are how units in
the game are maneuvered, players usually commanding 1 or more brigades.
You will find that as you paint your miniature armies,
you will organize them by brigade and field them as such.
Troops are therefore amassed in contingents. A contingent
will consist of a brigade of foot, with its associated cavalry and artillery.
The brigade will be fielded as such, the cavalry on the table is stripped
away and combined with other contingents cavalry to form the cavalry brigades.
The artillery will either be left with the brigade (if battalion guns -
see below) or brigaded into filed batteries.
The proportion of contingents within an army is provided
at the end of the national lists.
We have also amended to artillery lists to provide a more
realistic proportion of guns to troops using data supplied by Chandler
that indicate a proportion of between 1 gun per 1000 men and 2 guns per
1000 men with the typical proportion being towards the lower end of the
scale.
The artillery rations also take into account the fact
that the indications appear to be that battalion guns are usually included
in the gun lists provided in most contemporary sources. Therefore, as per
the notes on rules modifications, battalion guns are not factored for in
the game as per the rules. The main difference between armies with battalions
guns and those without, is whether small light field pieces were deployed
and moved with the infantry, or if they were brigaded together operating
independently if the foot.
A game can be had with as little as 1 contingent per side,
but the recommended size is for at 4 contingents per side divided into
three wings, a left, center and right wing with 1 player per wing in each
army.
